**SEOUL, SOUTH KOREA** – North Korea has detonated explosives on two key border roads connecting the country to South Korea, further escalating tensions between the two nations. The explosions, confirmed by South Korea’s military on Tuesday, occurred on the Gyeongui Line and Donghae Line, effectively blocking access and reinforcing the border.

The South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) said North Korean forces deployed heavy equipment to carry out the operation and have also been reinforcing defensive fortifications along the border. In response, the South Korean military fired warning shots and increased surveillance in cooperation with the U.S.

“Our military has fired warning shots in areas south of the Military Demarcation Line,” said the JCS in a statement. “The military is closely monitoring North Korean activities and has reinforced surveillance and alert posture in cooperation with the U.S., maintaining a state of full readiness.”

Tensions between North and South Korea have been on the rise for months, with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un declaring the two nations hostile states in December 2023. Pyongyang has been engaging in provocative actions, including sending thousands of trash balloons into South Korea and threatening a response to civilian balloon launches.

Last week, North Korea accused South Korea of flying drones over Pyongyang and ordered artillery units to be on high alert. South Korea’s Defense Ministry has issued a strong warning, stating that Pyongyang will face the “end of its regime” if it harms any South Koreans.
