Wed Oct 16 15:20:00 UTC 2024: ## North Korean Soldiers Reportedly Desert Russian Frontline Amidst Alleged Deployment
**Moscow, Russia** – A group of 18 North Korean soldiers are believed to have deserted their positions on the Russian frontline, according to Ukrainian intelligence sources. The soldiers, reportedly deployed in the Kursk and Bryansk regions bordering Ukraine, vanished while Russia is searching for them.
This incident follows reports that Moscow was planning to deploy a battalion of North Korean troops in Ukraine, specifically in the Southwestern regions where heavy fighting persists. These troops were expected to form a special “Buryat battalion,” named after the indigenous Mongolic group residing in Siberia, Mongolia, and China.
The deployment plan comes amidst a strengthening relationship between Russia and North Korea, with the two nations signing a comprehensive strategic partnership agreement in June. This agreement contains a clause similar to NATO’s Article 5, promising military assistance should either country be attacked.
While Russia has denied any involvement of North Korean troops in Ukraine, South Korea’s Defense Minister confirmed the possibility of their deployment, citing the recent treaty as evidence.
Last week, Ukrainian media reported the deaths of six North Korean officers near Donetsk, with three others injured. These claims are yet to be independently verified.
The desertion incident further highlights the complex situation in Ukraine, where the involvement of international forces, including North Korea, remains a significant point of concern.
Both the Russian Ministry of Defense and North Korea’s mission to the United Nations have been contacted for comment.
