**Pune:** The festive season of Kojagari Purnima saw a surge in milk demand in Pune, leading to a significant price increase. While demand skyrocketed, supply failed to keep pace, resulting in milk prices reaching ₹83 per liter in the city’s wholesale market on Wednesday.
The Ganesh Peth market, known as Dudh Bhatti, received only 1,000 to 1,500 liters of milk on Wednesday, a stark contrast to usual supply levels. This shortage was attributed to numerous public organizations, institutions, and societies celebrating Kojagari Purnima, leading to increased demand. Dairy operators also reported a surge in milk orders.
Milk was sourced from various areas around Pune, including Aranyeshwar, Khadki, Lashkar, Mundhwa, and Nagar Road. Additionally, rural areas like Bhor, Velhe, and Nasrapur contributed to the supply.
Ramdas Kale, President of the Ganesh Peth Milk Market Co-operative, and Vice President Damodar Hingmire highlighted the price increase of an 18-liter milk can, which rose to ₹1,500 from ₹1,300 last year. This price hike was attributed to the strong demand and lower milk availability.
**High Demand Expected to Continue Until Diwali**
The demand for milk is expected to remain elevated throughout the festive season, from Navratri to Diwali, as sweet makers require larger quantities during this time. The supply shortage, coupled with the upcoming Diwali festival, is likely to push milk prices even higher, according to Kale and Hingmire.
**Urbanization Impeding Milk Supply**
Urbanization around Pune has been impacting milk supply in recent years. The increasing value of suburban and rural land has made it difficult for farmers to maintain buffalo herds.
Farmers from areas like Bhor, Velhe, Haveli, Mulshi, and Maval talukas supply milk to Pune. However, the rising costs of animals and higher upkeep expenses have led to reduced milk production.
