Wed Oct 16 07:00:00 UTC 2024: ## India Faces Bowling Crisis Ahead of Australia Series: Shami’s Injury and Bumrah’s Captaincy

**Bengaluru, India:** India’s preparations for the upcoming five-Test series against Australia have hit a major snag with the news of Mohammed Shami’s injury setback. The star pacer, sidelined since the World Cup last year with an Achilles heel injury, has now suffered a swelling in his knee, delaying his return to international cricket.

Captain Rohit Sharma confirmed that Shami’s recovery has been hampered and that the team won’t rush him back, prioritizing his full fitness. “We don’t want to bring an undercooked Shami to Australia,” Rohit emphasized in a press conference. Shami will be assessed after the New Zealand series to determine his availability for the Australian tour.

With Shami’s recovery uncertain, India is left scrambling for pace bowling options. To address this, the team has called up a bevy of reserves including Harshit Rana, Mayank Yadav, and Nitish Reddy. These players will be closely monitored throughout the New Zealand series as potential replacements for the Australia tour.

Adding to India’s concerns, Prasidh Krishna, another potential fast-bowling option, suffered a setback during the Ranji Trophy.

Rohit emphasized the need to build a strong bench strength, especially in the pace bowling department. “We want to create a group of fast bowlers where we have 8 or 9 options,” he stated. He further explained the rationale behind including the reserve players in the New Zealand tour, stating, “We want to monitor them and see their workload. A lot of these guys have injuries in the past. So it’s important that we try and build them up.”

Adding another layer of uncertainty, Rohit’s own participation in the Australia series is also in doubt. Jasprit Bumrah, named vice-captain for the New Zealand series, has been entrusted with leadership duties. Rohit expressed confidence in Bumrah’s abilities as a captain, highlighting his experience and leadership qualities.

India faces a challenging task in the upcoming months, needing to overcome a series of injury setbacks and prepare a strong team for the grueling Australian Test series. The next few weeks will be crucial in assessing the fitness of key players and determining the final squad for the high-stakes tour.
