Wed Oct 16 12:00:00 UTC 2024: ## Kerala Government Reinstates Spot Booking for Sabarimala Pilgrims Amidst Controversy

**Thiruvananthapuram:** In a significant reversal, the Kerala government has reinstated the spot booking system for Sabarimala pilgrims, bowing to mounting pressure from various quarters. The decision comes after widespread protests from the opposition, CPI, BJP, Hindu organizations, and even the CPI(M) state secretary M.V. Govinadan, who strongly advocated for retaining the spot booking facility.

The government’s initial decision to eliminate spot booking and rely solely on online registration sparked criticism, with fears of a repeat of the 2018 Sabarimala women entry protests. The upcoming by-elections and local elections, coupled with concerns about alienating devotees, also factored into the government’s decision.

The decision was further influenced by accusations of a hidden agenda with the Sangh Parivar.

Addressing the Assembly, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan asserted that the government is committed to ensuring a smooth pilgrimage experience for all devotees, including those arriving without prior online registration. The government intends to enhance the facilities at Sannidhanam, Pamba, and accommodation points to cater to all pilgrims.

To facilitate a more efficient pilgrimage, the government plans to:

* Enhance coordination among the Travancore Devaswom Board, police, and various departments.
* Establish 12 emergency medical centers and deploy ambulances at Nilakkal and Pamba.
* Collaborate with the forest department to set up medical centers along the Kari Mala route.
* Ensure the availability of cardiologists during the pilgrimage season.
* Undertake road repairs and improve facilities for devotees on the forest paths.

The Devaswom Board had initially proposed to eliminate spot booking, aiming to restrict daily pilgrim numbers to 80,000. The move was justified by the need to guarantee the comfort and safety of pilgrims. However, the opposition pointed out the difficulties faced by devotees, particularly those from other states, who may not be aware of the online booking system.

The government’s decision to reinstate spot booking appears to be a strategic move to appease both devotees and the public, who have expressed concerns over the logistical challenges associated with the online system.
