The United States is sending its cutting-edge Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) system to Israel, a move signaling both countries’ concerns over increasing threats from Iran and its allies. The deployment of the THAAD battery, announced by the Pentagon on Sunday, comes in addition to Israel’s existing array of air defense systems.
The THAAD system, a mobile surface-to-air interceptor, is capable of destroying incoming ballistic and cruise missiles both within and above the Earth’s atmosphere. It is a significant addition to Israel’s defenses, particularly given the recent escalation of tensions in the region.
Along with the THAAD battery, approximately 100 American troops will be stationed in Israel to operate the system. This deployment places US personnel closer to the heart of the volatile Middle East, underscoring the seriousness of the perceived threats.
Military experts view the deployment as a strong political statement. “It’s a political message of the United States to Israel that, ‘We are with you,’” said Yehoshua Kalisky, a military technology expert at the Institute for National Security Studies in Tel Aviv. “And to enemies, it’s: ‘Don’t’.”
The THAAD system consists of five key components: interceptor missiles, launchers, radar, a command-and-control platform, and support equipment. The interceptor missile utilizes the force of impact to destroy targets, without relying on warheads.
There are currently nine active THAAD batteries worldwide, with seven belonging to the US Army and deployed in Guam and South Korea. The battery earmarked for Israel will likely be drawn from this existing pool.
