Tue Oct 15 13:40:00 UTC 2024: ## West Indies Storm into Women’s T20 World Cup Semifinals with Dominant Win Over England

Dubai, UAE – In a stunning upset, the West Indies women’s cricket team secured their first semifinal berth in the Women’s T20 World Cup since 2018, defeating reigning champions England by six wickets on Tuesday. The victory marked England’s first loss of the tournament and ended their title defense.

The Caribbean side’s success was largely attributed to a blistering century partnership between opener Qiana Joseph and captain Hayley Matthews. Joseph, promoted to the top of the order in the absence of injured veteran Stafanie Taylor, smashed 52 runs off 38 balls, including two sixes and four fours, while Matthews, who was also on fire, contributed a half-century of her own.

The West Indies openers dominated the Powerplay, scoring 67 runs off the first six overs, the highest Powerplay total of the tournament, surpassing their own record set against Scotland. Joseph reached her first T20I half-century off just 34 balls, the fastest against England in this format.

The English fielding was disastrous, dropping Joseph twice in the first five overs. In stark contrast, Dottin, who had returned to international cricket for this tournament, proved crucial in the dismissal of both Danielle Wyatt-Hodge and Alice Capsey, making England’s chase even more difficult.

Though England managed to reach 141 thanks to Nat Sciver-Brunt’s gritty half-century, it proved insufficient against the onslaught of the West Indies batting. Despite a late fightback, England could not overcome the early onslaught and their poor fielding.

The West Indies’ semifinal berth is a testament to their batting prowess and their ability to overcome setbacks. Their next challenge awaits in the semifinal, where they will face either Australia or India.
