**Seoul, October 12, 2024** – North Korea has once again sent a barrage of trash balloons across the border into South Korea, the South Korean military confirmed Saturday. This marks the 28th instance of such activity since May. Around 20 balloons carrying household garbage, including scrap paper and plastic, were launched late Friday and early Saturday morning, with approximately 10 landing in the border county of Cheorwon. No hazardous substances were detected.
Simultaneously, North Korea claimed that South Korea had sent unmanned drones carrying leaflets over Pyongyang on three occasions last week, including October 3rd and Wednesday and Thursday of this week. However, South Korean Defence Minister Kim Yong-hyun refuted these allegations, stating he could not confirm the North’s claim.
The exchange of accusations underscores the ongoing tension between the two Koreas. While the South has condemned the balloon launches as a form of provocation, North Korea’s claims of drone incursions remain unsubstantiated.
