Tue Oct 15 00:05:44 UTC 2024: ## BYU’s Jewish Quarterback Leading Cougars to Unexpected Success

**Provo, Utah** – BYU’s surprising 5-0 start in the Big 12 has a lot to do with their standout quarterback, Jake Retzlaff. The Jewish athlete, who transferred to BYU after attending two junior colleges in California, has become a fan favorite and a beacon of inspiration for young Jewish athletes.

Retzlaff’s journey to BYU was unique. The Los Angeles native initially questioned his decision to join the LDS school, but has since discovered his faith has helped him grow and become a stronger player. He started the final three games of last season and won the starting job this year over veteran quarterback Gerry Bohanon.

Retzlaff’s play has been instrumental in BYU’s undefeated record, particularly in conference games. He’s completed 61.2% of his passes for 1,208 yards and 12 touchdowns. The Cougars are projected as the Big 12 champions, a feat that would earn them a first-round bye in the College Football Playoff.

Despite the pressure of being the starting quarterback, Retzlaff remains committed to his faith. He admits it’s difficult to attend every Shabbat service, but finds solace on the field. “It’s where I find so much sanctuary, where I find so the feeling of God behind me and what I’m doing,” he shared.

Retzlaff’s story has resonated with fans and fellow Jewish athletes. He hopes to inspire the next generation of Jewish football players by showing them that anything is possible. “I feel like I’m here for a reason,” he said. “I get to go play out there on television, and hopefully somewhere there’s a Jewish kid watching (thinking) I can do that too.”

As BYU prepares to face Arizona this Saturday, Retzlaff and the Cougars will look to continue their hot streak and prove that their success is no fluke.
