Tue Oct 15 18:23:17 UTC 2024: ## Wayback Machine Back Online, Read-Only After DDoS Attacks
**San Francisco, CA -** The Internet Archive’s iconic Wayback Machine, which allows users to access archived versions of websites, is back online in a read-only state after a series of DDoS attacks took the platform offline last week. The attacks, which began on October 9th, targeted the entire platform, making it inaccessible to users.
Founder Brewster Kahle confirmed the service’s return, stating that it is “resumed in a provisional, read-only manner” and will not be able to save new pages at this time. While the attacks coincided with the Internet Archive’s planned disclosure of a previous data breach affecting over 31 million records, security researcher Troy Hunt believes the timing is “entirely coincidental.”
The hacking group Blackmeta claimed responsibility for the attacks, claiming that the Internet Archive “belongs to the USA.” The nonprofit, founded in 1996, is based in San Francisco.
While the Wayback Machine is now operational again, Kahle warns that further maintenance may be required, potentially leading to future disruptions.
