Mon Oct 14 20:03:36 UTC 2024: ## Diplomatic Crisis Escalates: India Recalls Envoy, Expels Canadian Diplomats

**New Delhi, India** – India and Canada are locked in a deepening diplomatic row, with tensions reaching a boiling point on Monday night. New Delhi recalled its top envoy to Ottawa and expelled six Canadian diplomats, including the Acting High Commissioner, in response to Canada’s allegations of Indian involvement in the murder of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar on Canadian soil.

The escalation came after Ottawa named India’s High Commissioner to Canada and other diplomats as “persons of interest” in the Nijjar murder investigation. India condemned the accusations as “baseless” and “preposterous” and accused the Canadian government of failing to share any evidence despite repeated requests.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) stated that the “baseless targeting” of Indian diplomats endangered their safety, citing an atmosphere of extremism and violence in Canada. India expressed a lack of faith in the Canadian government’s commitment to ensure the safety of its diplomats and announced the withdrawal of High Commissioner Sanjay Kumar Verma and other targeted officials.

Following the announcement, India swiftly expelled six Canadian diplomats, including Acting High Commissioner Stewart Ross Wheeler, Deputy High Commissioner Patrick Hebert, and several First Secretaries. They were given five days to leave India.

“It is in the interest of both our countries and the people of our countries to get to the bottom of this. Canada stands ready to cooperate with India,” Wheeler stated after being summoned by the MEA.

India has accused the Trudeau government of engaging in “vote bank politics” and not taking sufficient action against separatist elements on Canadian soil. This latest development marks a significant deterioration in diplomatic ties between the two countries, which have been strained since last September when Prime Minister Justin Trudeau first alleged Indian government involvement in Nijjar’s murder.

This diplomatic crisis highlights a serious breakdown in trust between India and Canada. The situation remains volatile, with further escalation possible if neither side backs down from its stance.
