Mon Oct 14 20:50:34 UTC 2024: ## Diplomatic Crisis Erupts Between India and Canada Over Alleged Indian Agent Involvement in Homicides
**OTTAWA/NEW DELHI** – Relations between India and Canada have plunged to a new low with both countries expelling their top diplomats in a dramatic escalation of a long-standing dispute. The crisis stems from accusations by the Canadian government that Indian agents were involved in homicides, extortion, and violent acts targeting supporters of the pro-Khalistan movement on Canadian soil.
Canadian police allege that over a dozen Indian agents were involved in the criminal activity, which they say specifically targeted individuals advocating for a separate Sikh homeland in India. While police did not confirm a direct link between the agents and the June 2023 murder of Sikh separatist leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Canada, the revelation has further inflamed tensions.
India vehemently denies the allegations, calling them “preposterous” and accusing Canada of pandering to its large Sikh community for political gain. Delhi has also accused Canada of providing no evidence to support its claims and has defended its High Commissioner Sanjay Kumar Verma, calling the aspersions cast on him “ludicrous.”
The diplomatic stand-off began after Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau publicly stated that Canada had credible evidence linking Indian agents to Nijjar’s murder. This led to India suspending visa services and demanding the withdrawal of dozens of Canadian diplomatic staff.
On Monday, India’s foreign ministry escalated the situation by ordering six Canadian diplomats, including acting High Commissioner Stewart Ross Wheeler, to leave India by October 19th. Wheeler was also summoned to explain Canada’s actions, to which he responded by stating that Canada had provided India with the evidence it had requested and that it was now India’s responsibility to investigate the allegations.
In a further move, India announced the withdrawal of its top envoy and other diplomats, citing a lack of faith in the Canadian government’s commitment to ensuring their security.
Canadian authorities, meanwhile, have defended their public disclosure of the investigation, citing significant threats to public safety. RCMP Commissioner Mike Duheme stated that there were over a dozen credible and imminent threats to life specifically targeting pro-Khalistan movement members, deemed serious enough to warrant public intervention.
The current diplomatic impasse represents a significant setback in relations between the two countries. While there was a brief thaw in October when India resumed processing visas, the recent developments suggest a deep mistrust and animosity between the two nations. The situation is further complicated by the ongoing investigation into Nijjar’s murder and the potential for further violent incidents in Canada.
