Tue Oct 15 14:02:34 UTC 2024: ## India Ranks 105th in Global Hunger Index, Shows Some Improvement

**New Delhi:** India has climbed one position in the Global Hunger Index (GHI) 2023, ranking 105th out of 127 countries. Despite this marginal improvement, India remains in the “serious” category with a GHI score of 27.3.

The GHI, a joint initiative of Concern Worldwide and Welthungerhilfe, assesses hunger levels and its underlying causes in a country. Lower scores indicate better food security.

This year, India performed better than its neighbours Sri Lanka (56th), Nepal (68th) and Bangladesh (84th), all categorized as “moderate” in hunger levels. However, it trailed behind Pakistan (109th) and Afghanistan (116th), both placed in the “serious” category.

The report highlighted the devastating impact of conflicts in Gaza and Sudan, which have created “exceptional food crises.” Other countries grappling with severe food insecurity due to conflict include the Democratic Republic of Congo, Haiti, Mali, and Syria.
