Mon Oct 14 23:44:17 UTC 2024: ## North Korea Threatens South Korea with Retaliation Over Drone Flights
Tensions between North and South Korea are escalating as Pyongyang threatens military action in response to alleged drone flights by Seoul over its airspace.
The North Korean government issued a statement claiming that South Korea flew unmanned drones into its airspace on October 3, 9, and 10. While South Korea’s Defense Minister initially denied the accusation, the Joint Chiefs of Staff later admitted that they could not confirm the validity of North Korea’s claims.
Following the accusations, Kim Yo Jong, sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, issued a statement warning that any further drone flights over North Korean territory would be met with “unconditional and merciless retaliation.” She accused South Korea of jeopardizing North Korea’s security.
This escalating conflict follows a recent series of missile tests by North Korea and joint military exercises between South Korea and the US, which have further strained relations between the two nations.
Kim Jong Un has previously warned South Korea that any attack would be met with nuclear retaliation. In a further demonstration of its stance, North Korea has closed its border with South Korea, suspending all traffic and rail services.
The international community is closely monitoring the situation, fearing that the escalating tensions could lead to further conflict.
