Mon Oct 14 13:45:14 UTC 2024: ## Northeast Monsoon Brings Heavy Rains to Tamil Nadu

**Chennai, October 14, 2024:** The Northeast monsoon has officially arrived in Tamil Nadu, bringing with it heavy rain and the promise of a wet season. A low-pressure area forming over the southeast Bay of Bengal has triggered widespread rainfall, particularly in north Tamil Nadu and the delta districts.

The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Chennai has forecasted intense rain spells beginning on Monday, October 14th, with the heaviest rainfall expected on October 15th and 16th. Chennai and its surrounding districts are predicted to experience extremely heavy rainfall, with over 20 cm anticipated in isolated areas on October 16th.

Several weather stations across the state have already recorded moderate to heavy rainfall. Budalur in Thanjavur district received the highest amount with 12 cm in the past 24 hours. Chennai itself saw rainfall in various areas, including Meenambakkam, Puzhal, and Nungambakkam.

The interaction between the low-pressure area and a depression over the central Arabian Sea is pushing moisture-laden clouds towards the region, causing the intense rainfall.

The withdrawal of the Southwest monsoon is expected within the next two days, paving the way for the Northeast monsoon to fully establish itself.
