Mon Oct 14 12:30:28 UTC 2024: ## Former Delhi University Professor G N Saibaba Passes Away After Post-Operative Complications

**Hyderabad, India:** G N Saibaba, a former Delhi University professor who was acquitted in an alleged Maoist links case earlier this year, passed away at the age of 54 on October 12th. Saibaba had been hospitalized at Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS) in Hyderabad for the past 20 days due to complications following a gallbladder surgery performed two weeks prior.

Saibaba, who was wheelchair-bound due to a disability, was initially convicted in 2017 and sentenced to life imprisonment by a trial court in Maharashtra’s Gadchiroli district. However, in March 2023, the Nagpur bench of the Bombay High Court acquitted him and five others, citing a lack of evidence and finding the prosecution’s case flawed. The court overturned his sentence, stating that the sanction for prosecution under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) was “null and void” due to a lack of proper consideration.

Following his release from Nagpur Central Jail after 10 years, Saibaba alleged that he had been denied adequate medical care while incarcerated, despite suffering from a paralysis on one side of his body.

Saibaba’s death has sparked renewed discussions on the legal and medical treatment of individuals accused of terrorism in India, as well as the rights of those with disabilities within the prison system.
