Mon Oct 14 13:01:48 UTC 2024: ## Kerala PSC seeks massive salary hike for members, citing 2016 revision
**Thiruvananthapuram:** The Kerala Public Service Commission (PSC) has requested a significant increase in the salaries of its Chairman and members, with a proposal to implement the revision backdating to 2016. The government is currently considering this request.
According to a letter from the PSC, the proposed salary hike mirrors the revision implemented for judicial officers in 2016. The PSC Chairman, along with 19 other members, are advocating for an increase that aligns their remuneration with the highest salary scales for District Judges.
Currently, the PSC Chairman’s base salary stands at Rs. 76,450, while the proposal suggests raising it to Rs. 2,24,100. Similarly, members’ base salary is proposed to increase from Rs. 70,290 to Rs. 2,19,090. The request also includes a hike in house rent allowance from Rs. 10,000 to Rs. 35,000 and travel allowance from Rs. 5,000 to Rs. 10,000.
This proposed revision would bring the total compensation for the Chairman to over Rs. 3.5 lakhs, including central Dearness Allowance, while members would receive over Rs. 3.5 lakhs. The backdating of the revision would require a hefty payment of approximately Rs. 35 crores in arrears.
While the Finance department has acknowledged the PSC’s request, they are hesitant to make an immediate decision, citing the ongoing economic crisis. However, if approved, the revision will be implemented retroactively, resulting in a significant financial burden for the state government.
