**Chennai, October 14, 2024:** A low-pressure area is expected to form in the Bay of Bengal today, with the potential to intensify into a deep depression, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). This could bring heavy rainfall to northern Tamil Nadu and southern Andhra Pradesh coastal regions by October 15th and 16th.
The IMD’s Southern Regional Director, S. Balasundaram, stated that the southwest monsoon has withdrawn from India and the northeast monsoon is expected to begin on the 15th or 16th of October. He further explained that a circulation over Tamil Nadu’s interior and another over the southeast Bay of Bengal are contributing to the formation of the low-pressure area.

* **October 14th (today):** Widespread light to moderate rain with thunderstorms is predicted across Tamil Nadu. Delta districts (Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Mayiladuthurai), Villupuram, Cuddalore, Ariyalur, Perambalur, and Pudukkottai could experience heavy rain.
* **October 15th (tomorrow):** Chennai, Thiruvallur, Kanchipuram, Chengalpattu, Ranipet, Tiruvannamalai, Kallakurichi, Cuddalore, and Puducherry might see heavy to very heavy rain in some areas. Other districts like Vellore, Tirupattur, Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri, Salem, Erode, Ariyalur, Perambalur, Delta districts, and Karaikal could experience heavy rain in isolated places.
* **October 16th:** Chennai, Thiruvallur, Kanchipuram, Chengalpattu could witness very heavy to extremely heavy rain in isolated spots. Speeds are anticipated to reach 55 kmph on the 14th and 15th, increasing to 65 kmph in northern coastal areas and 55 kmph in southern coastal areas and the Gulf of Mannar on the 16th and 17th. Fishermen have been advised to avoid venturing out to sea.
The IMD has issued an alert for very heavy to extremely heavy rain in Chennai and surrounding districts on October 16th. Residents are advised to take necessary precautions.
