Mon Oct 14 18:24:41 UTC 2024: ## India Expels Six Canadian Diplomats Amidst Tensions over Khalistani Terrorist’s Murder
**New Delhi, India:** In a dramatic escalation of the ongoing diplomatic spat, India has expelled six Canadian diplomats, accusing them of interference in the investigation into the murder of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. The diplomats have been given until 11:59 PM on Saturday, October 19, 2024, to leave India.
Furthermore, India has also recalled its High Commissioner from Canada. This decisive action comes in response to Canada’s attempt to implicate Indian officials, including High Commissioner Sanjay Kumar Verma, in the Nijjar assassination.
Tensions between India and Canada have been simmering for over a year over Nijjar’s murder, which occurred outside a gurdwara in British Columbia in June 2023. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has accused India of involvement in the killing.
India has reacted strongly to these allegations, issuing a statement condemning Canada’s actions and describing them as creating a “climate of extremism and violence”. The statement further expressed concerns over the safety of Indian officials in Canada.
The expelled Canadian diplomats include Acting High Commissioner Stewart Ross Wheeler, Deputy High Commissioner Patrick Hébert, First Secretary Marie Catherine Jolly, First Secretary Lane Ross David Trietsch, First Secretary Adam James Chuipek, and First Secretary Paula Orjuela.
India has warned of further action if Canada does not cease its “anti-India activities”. This latest development follows a meeting between Prime Ministers Modi and Trudeau at the ASEAN Summit in Laos just two days ago.
