Sun Oct 13 05:41:33 UTC 2024: ## Shield Season Opens with Draws as Marsh Falls Short of Century

Perth, Australia – The opening round of the Sheffield Shield season ended with a stalemate as Western Australia and Queensland drew their match at the WACA Ground. Despite a valiant effort by allrounder Mitch Marsh, who missed out on a century by just six runs, Queensland fell short of their target, ending the match at 1-120 off 35 overs.

Marsh, batting only as a precaution for the upcoming Test series against India, struck 14 fours and a six in his innings of 94. His attempted pull for six off Jack Wildermuth ultimately ended his innings, with wicketkeeper Jimmy Peirson taking an easy catch.

Meanwhile, Queensland opener Matt Renshaw failed to impress, scoring just 15 runs in the second innings, adding to his six-run dismissal in the first. This poor performance could hinder his chances of earning a Test recall.

Another player hoping for a Test berth, WA opener Cameron Bancroft, continued his disappointing form with two ducks.

The match saw a strong performance from WA wicketkeeper Josh Inglis, who further strengthened his case for a potential Test spot with scores of 122 and 48.

Queensland, however, will be encouraged by the performance of their veteran batsman Usman Khawaja, who remained unbeaten on 64, and Marnus Labuschagne, who finished on 35 not out.

The draw means that both teams will be looking to bounce back in their upcoming One-Day Cup match at the WACA Ground on Sunday. WA will be aiming to defend their Shield title for the fourth consecutive year, while Queensland will be hoping to make a strong statement in the competition.
