**Rabat, Morocco:** In a shocking turn of events, the Sahara Desert, known for its arid landscapes, experienced catastrophic floods, leaving a trail of devastation and raising serious concerns about climate change. Two days of relentless rainfall in southeastern Morocco transformed the parched landscape into a flooded expanse, a sight unseen for over 50 years.
The remote village of Tagounite, 450 kilometers south of Rabat, bore the brunt of the deluge, recording over 100mm of rainfall in just 24 hours, far exceeding the region’s yearly average. This extraordinary event revived Lake Iriqui, a dry lake bed untouched by water for half a century, filling it with floodwaters.
Meteorologists have described the event as unprecedented, with decades since such intense rainfall hit the region in such a short time. The floods, caused by an extratropical storm, claimed 18 lives and extended into regions still recovering from a devastating earthquake the previous year.
The Sahara Desert, a vast stretch covering over 9 million square kilometers, faces growing threats from extreme weather events amplified by global warming. Scientists warn that such dramatic weather occurrences may become more frequent as global temperatures rise.
Celeste Saulo, Secretary-General of the World Meteorological Organization, stressed the link between rising global temperatures and disrupted water cycles. “A warmer atmosphere holds more moisture, which is conducive to heavy rainfall. More rapid evaporation worsens drought conditions,” she said.
This unprecedented flooding of the Sahara Desert highlights the urgent need to address climate change and prepare for more extreme weather events in the future.
