Sun Oct 13 16:05:48 UTC 2024: ## Train Crash Near Chennai Raises Concerns of Similar Incident to Deadly Balasore Collision

**Chennai, India** – A high-speed collision between a passenger train and a stationary freight train near Chennai has left nine people injured, prompting investigations by the Indian Railways and the National Investigation Agency (NIA).

The incident, which occurred on Saturday evening, involved the Mysuru-Darbhanga Bagmati express crashing into the freight train while switching tracks. Initial reports suggest the passenger train was traveling at approximately 75 km/h, and the impact was mitigated by timely braking and the newer LHB coaches, which are designed to minimize damage in collisions.

The incident bears striking similarities to the deadly Balasore train crash in June 2023, which claimed over 300 lives. The collision occurred at a similar location, where a passenger train switched tracks and crashed into a stationary train. This has raised concerns about potential flaws in the signaling system and has prompted calls for a thorough investigation.

“This collision almost repeats the Balasore train collision,” said R Kumaresan, president of the All India Loco Running Staff Association. “The railways should take a serious approach to remove the anomalies in the signalling system.”

The Indian Railways is considering multiple scenarios, including the possibility of external factors contributing to the crash. The NIA has also joined the investigation, suggesting that the possibility of sabotage is being considered.

While the exact cause of the crash remains under investigation, initial findings suggest a possible interlocking system failure. The Indian Railways is conducting a full investigation into the incident, and the findings will determine the next steps to prevent similar incidents in the future.
