Sun Oct 13 07:00:00 UTC 2024: ## iPhone 15 Pro and 16 Action Button: A Clever Idea, But Limited Functionality

**Apple’s new Action button, replacing the silent switch on iPhone 15 Pro and 16 models, offers potential, but its current implementation leaves some users wanting more.**

While the Action button can be customized for various functions, from turning on the flashlight to focusing the camera, its biggest shortcoming lies in its inability to handle multiple shortcuts simultaneously. Users are forced to constantly reconfigure the button in settings whenever they want to change its function, making it less convenient than expected.

“It’s a clever idea,” says Josh, a staff writer for Tom’s Guide, “but I wish it could do more than one thing at a time.”

He also questions the button’s necessity, arguing that many of its functions can be easily achieved through on-screen controls. “What difference would it make to assign that task to a button, especially if I’ve got to then change the settings to do something else with the Action button?”

Although a third-party app, Actions, can offer more flexibility, it’s considered cumbersome and not a solution Apple should rely on. Josh hopes future updates will address these limitations, allowing for multiple shortcut assignments and making the Action button truly user-friendly.

In the meantime, users can utilize an on-screen shortcut for silencing their phone as introduced by iOS 18, a less ideal solution compared to a dedicated button.

While the Action button holds promise, its current form lacks the versatility it could offer. As the technology evolves, hopefully, Apple will prioritize functionality and convenience, making the Action button a truly valuable addition to the iPhone experience.
