Sun Oct 13 15:22:22 UTC 2024: ## British Footballers Find New Home in Finland’s Veikkausliiga

**Helsinki, Finland** – While England prepares to face Finland in the Nations League, a curious trend has emerged in Finnish football: a surge in British players and managers. The Veikkausliiga, Finland’s top football league, boasts 12 players from the UK, a number not seen since 1996.

This influx can be attributed to several factors, including a desire for playing opportunities and a more relaxed playing style. Many British players have found success in Finland after facing setbacks in English professional football.

**Ashley Coffey**, a striker for AC Oulu, is a prime example. Released from Bradford City’s academy at 15 for being “too slow”, Coffey persevered and ultimately found success in Sweden before moving to Finland. He credits the Finnish league for allowing him to thrive as a more physical player.

“I’ve been kicked and pulled around by men in England,” Coffey told BBC Sport. “Whereas in Sweden and Finland, the lads I’m playing against are quite young. Technically they’re very good players, but I feel like I’ve got a bit of an edge in terms of physicality and aggression.”

Other British players like **Alfie Cicale** of VPS Vaasa have also found success in Finland after facing challenges in England. Cicale, a graduate of Oxford University, found it difficult to break into professional football in England but was given a chance in Finland. He now describes it as a “good platform for exhibiting your abilities.”

**Stevie Grieve**, the manager of SJK Seinajoki, is another example of a British professional finding success in Finland. He has a wealth of experience in scouting and analysis and has worked in numerous countries, including India, where he even had his own television show.

Grieve sees the Veikkausliiga as a “secure working environment” for coaches, and a league that attracts a different type of player.

“It’s not 100 mph like an EFL game,” Grieve explained. “The technical level here is higher. It’s way more aggressive and more contact…People who want to try and develop their career and develop a style of play might be more inclined to go somewhere like Finland.”

The influx of British players and managers has added a new dimension to the Veikkausliiga. While Finland’s footballing identity may be rooted in ice hockey, its growing connection to the UK is proving to be a mutually beneficial exchange. As the league continues to evolve, it remains to be seen if the British contingent will continue to grow and further enhance the competitive landscape of Finnish football.
