**Hyderabad, India** – G.N. Saibaba, a former Delhi University professor who was acquitted in a controversial Maoist links case earlier this year, has died at the age of 54. Saibaba passed away Saturday evening at Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS) in Hyderabad due to complications arising from a gall bladder infection.

Saibaba had undergone surgery for the infection two weeks ago, but his condition deteriorated subsequently. He had been admitted to NIMS for the past 20 days.

Saibaba was a vocal critic of the government and had been accused of being a member of the Communist Party of India (Maoist). He was arrested in 2014 and sentenced to life imprisonment in 2017. However, in March 2023, the Nagpur bench of the Bombay High Court acquitted him and five others, citing insufficient evidence.

Following his acquittal, Saibaba, who was wheelchair-bound due to a disability, was released from Nagpur Central Jail after spending 10 years in custody.

Saibaba had alleged mistreatment while in prison, claiming that he was denied medical care for nine months despite suffering a paralysis on the left side of his body. He also alleged that he was kidnapped and arrested by police in order to silence his dissent.

The death of G.N. Saibaba has been met with sorrow by many, including CPI MLA K. Sambasiva Rao who described it as a loss to society. His passing marks the end of a long and controversial journey, raising questions about the nature of the charges against him and the treatment he received during his imprisonment.
