Sun Oct 13 04:42:03 UTC 2024: ## Assam Shakes: Mild Earthquake Causes Panic, No Major Damage Reported
**GUWAHATI, INDIA** – A mild earthquake measuring 4.6 on the Richter scale shook parts of Assam and neighboring Bhutan early Sunday morning, causing brief panic but no reported casualties or significant damage. The tremor, which struck at 7:47 a.m. IST, originated near Udalguri, Assam, with a depth of 15 kilometers, according to the National Center for Seismology (NCS).
The tremors were felt across several regions including Dhekiajuli, Tawang, Barpeta, Goalpara, North Lakhimpur, Itanagar, Jorhat, Tezpur, Golaghat, Guwahati, Nagaon, and Dimapur, with residents in various towns reporting shaking that caused brief panic.
While the earthquake was considered mild, it served as a stark reminder of the region’s vulnerability to larger seismic events. Assam is located near the convergence of the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates, a seismically active zone that has witnessed several significant earthquakes in the past, including the devastating 1950 Assam-Tibet earthquake that registered a magnitude of 8.6.
Local authorities have activated emergency protocols and are conducting inspections of public buildings to ensure safety. The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) has advised residents to remain vigilant and has stressed the importance of earthquake preparedness.
Following the earthquake, local governments are planning to conduct community workshops aimed at educating residents about earthquake safety measures, including how to respond during an earthquake and how to secure their homes against potential damage.
