Tesla’s Optimus humanoid robot has sparked debate after appearing to converse with attendees at the recent “We, Robot” event. While CEO Elon Musk has envisioned Optimus eventually understanding and following spoken commands, there’s no official confirmation that the robot can currently speak independently.
Several videos shared on X (formerly Twitter) show Optimus interacting with people, seemingly engaging in conversation. However, tech journalist Robert Scoble confirmed that the robot’s “speech” is actually being piped through a human via walkie talkie.
While Tesla has focused on Optimus’ physical capabilities and task execution in controlled environments, the company’s goal is to eventually equip the robot with the ability to perform everyday tasks like walking a dog, mowing the lawn, and even being a friend.
Although Optimus’ communication abilities are still under development, the robot’s physical dexterity and potential for human interaction continue to impress. It remains to be seen when, or if, Tesla will achieve its ambitious vision of a fully independent and conversational humanoid robot.
