**Mumbai:** In a shocking incident, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader and former Maharashtra minister Baba Siddique was shot dead in Bandra East on Saturday night. The incident has triggered a political storm in the state ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections.
Siddique, who was a three-time MLA, was shot multiple times by three assailants as he was entering his car after leaving his son, MLA Zeeshan Siddique’s office. Despite having Y-level security, he was fatally wounded and succumbed to his injuries at Lilavati Hospital.
The Mumbai Police have confirmed the involvement of jailed gangster Lawrence Bishnoi in the killing. Two individuals, Gurmail Baljit Singh from Haryana and Dharmaraj Rajesh Kashyap from Uttar Pradesh, have been detained in connection with the incident. The third assailant remains at large.
The Bishnoi gang, known for its extortion activities and killings in North India, has previously threatened and fired at Bollywood actor Salman Khan’s residence in Mumbai. Opposition leaders, including Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, have criticized the deteriorating law and order situation in Maharashtra. Sharad Pawar, NCP chief, has called for the resignation of Maharashtra Home Minister Devendra Fadnavis.
