Sun Oct 13 01:10:00 UTC 2024: ## Generations Grapple with Retirement: Boomers Feel the Squeeze, Gen Z Leads the Pack

**Washington, D.C.** – A new episode of the USA TODAY podcast “The Excerpt” explores the vast generational differences in retirement planning and expectations. The podcast, hosted by Dana Taylor, features financial reporters Daniel de Visé and Bailey Schulz who share their insights on how each generation navigates the challenges of saving for their golden years.

The episode reveals a stark contrast between the generations. While Boomers, who grew accustomed to generous pension plans, are now facing anxiety about having enough saved for retirement, Gen Z, the youngest generation, appears to be on track with their savings.

“Boomers and Gen X are facing the consequences of the shift away from pensions to 401(k)s in the 1980s, which has left them with less time to accumulate savings,” explains Bailey Schulz. The COVID-19 pandemic, which forced many Boomers into early retirement, further added to their financial anxieties.

Gen X, meanwhile, has been impacted by a string of economic crises, including the dot-com bubble, the Great Recession, and the pandemic, leaving them feeling less confident about their ability to build savings. The episode also highlights the impact of “gray divorce” on retirement planning, particularly for women who often find themselves in a more vulnerable financial position after a mid-life split.

While Boomers have faced some advantages, including a period of lower interest rates and housing costs, younger generations are grappling with rising housing costs, student loan debt, and the uncertainty of a rapidly evolving job market.

“Gen Z is really learning from the mistakes of previous generations, especially the struggles during the Great Recession and the pandemic,” says Schulz. “They are prioritizing saving early to avoid those financial hardships.”

Daniel de Visé adds that Millennials, while facing significant challenges, are showing resilience and are making progress in catching up with their retirement savings. He also notes that the recent housing market boom has benefited Millennials, who have seen significant appreciation in their home values.

The episode concludes on a positive note, highlighting the optimism surrounding Gen Z’s commitment to saving for retirement. “It’s encouraging to see this younger generation taking a proactive approach to their financial future,” says Schulz.

“The Excerpt” podcast offers a compelling look at the generational dynamics shaping retirement planning in America, providing valuable insights for listeners across all ages.
