Sat Oct 12 01:10:27 UTC 2024: ## Northern Lights Dance Across UK Skies in Stunning Display
The Northern Lights, also known as aurora borealis, have once again graced the skies of the UK with a breathtaking spectacle, just five months after a similar display following the most intense geomagnetic storm in two decades. This latest occurrence, witnessed across the UK from Lewes in East Sussex to Gwynedd in Wales, was the strongest and most widespread aurora sighting since May 10, 2024.
The phenomenon is becoming more frequent as the Sun approaches its most active period in its 11-year solar cycle, expected to peak in 2024. During this “solar maximum,” the Sun’s magnetic field intensifies, leading to an increase in sunspots and powerful releases of energy in the form of solar flares and Coronal Mass Ejections (CMEs).
The May 2024 display was caused by a rare “cannibal CME,” where charged particles from multiple solar eruptions combined en route to Earth, triggering an extreme G5 geomagnetic storm. Such storms are incredibly rare, with the last one before May 2024 occurring in 2003.
As the Sun continues its journey towards its peak activity, we can expect more frequent and intense displays of the Northern Lights in the UK and beyond. This celestial spectacle, a reminder of the Sun’s immense power, is a testament to the beauty and wonder of the universe.
