**Washington, D.C.** – Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas has come under fire for a visit to upscale sushi restaurant Nobu in Washington D.C., following a trip to hurricane-ravaged North Carolina. The visit, captured by a New York Post photographer, occurred just hours after Mayorkas assured the public that the federal government had ample resources to handle both Hurricane Helene and Hurricane Milton relief efforts.
Mayorkas, who had previously been criticized for shoe shopping after Hurricane Helene’s landfall, visited the state on Thursday and assured North Carolina officials of federal support. However, his subsequent dinner at Nobu, a restaurant known for its high-priced menu, sparked outrage from critics who accused him of prioritizing personal luxury over the needs of those impacted by the devastating storms.
“Maybe Mayorkas could take a break from shoe shopping to look into this,” tweeted Elon Musk, citing a Fox News report that highlighted untapped FEMA funds.
Despite the criticism, Mayorkas maintains that the government has the resources to address both hurricanes. His spokesperson emphasized that “we will be there for every impacted community, every step of the way.”
The DHS reported rescuing over 4,300 people stranded or lost due to Hurricane Helene in North Carolina, with over 220 deaths reported across the Southeast.
Nobu restaurants declined to comment on the Secretary’s visit.
