Sat Oct 12 05:50:00 UTC 2024: ## Arizona State Upsets No. 16 Utah, Led by Skattebo’s Breakout Performance

TEMPE, Ariz. – In a thrilling upset, Arizona State defeated No. 16 Utah 27-19 on Friday night, showcasing a dominant rushing attack led by Cam Skattebo and a resilient defense.

Skattebo delivered a career-defining performance, racking up 158 yards and two touchdowns, including a highlight-reel 50-yard touchdown run in the third quarter. The Sun Devils (5-1, 2-1 Big 12) defied the odds, overcoming the loss of starting quarterback Sam Leavitt for most of the second quarter. Leavitt returned in the second half, throwing a touchdown pass before leaving again due to injury. However, backup quarterback Jeff Sims stepped up, completing the injury-inducing drive with a touchdown of his own.

Utah (4-2, 1-2) struggled to capitalize on scoring opportunities throughout the game, including a missed field goal and a turnover on downs inside the Sun Devils’ territory. Despite Cameron Rising’s return from injury, the Utes quarterback threw three interceptions and struggled to find his rhythm.

Arizona State’s defense played a crucial role in the upset, effectively stopping Utah’s running game and forcing turnovers. The Sun Devils’ impressive performance may elevate them into the national rankings for the first time since 2021. Meanwhile, the Utes are likely to drop out of the AP Top 25 following their second consecutive loss.

Arizona State will face another tough test next Saturday when they travel to Cincinnati.
