**Tiruchirappalli, Tamil Nadu:** An Air India Express flight bound for Sharjah was forced to return to its departure airport in Tiruchirappalli on Friday evening after experiencing a hydraulic failure shortly after takeoff. The flight, carrying 141 passengers, landed safely at 8:15 pm, after circling for over two and a half hours to reduce fuel and weight.
The aircraft, IX613, departed at 5:40 pm and reported the technical snag shortly after. While the airline maintained that no emergency was declared, Civil Aviation Minister Rammohan Naidu confirmed that a full emergency was declared at 18:05 IST. The crew, however, followed all safety protocols and ensured the well-being of all passengers.
The aircraft hovered around Tiruchirappalli while flight operators attempted to reduce fuel as a precaution before the emergency landing. Twenty ambulances and fire tenders were kept on standby at the airport as a precautionary measure.
The incident prompted quick action from authorities. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin immediately coordinated with officials and ensured all necessary safety measures were in place. He commended the captain and crew for their safe handling of the situation.
The DGCA officials continued to monitor the situation until the flight landed safely. An investigation into the cause of the hydraulic failure is underway. In the meantime, the airline has arranged an alternative aircraft for the passengers’ onward journey.
