An Air India Express flight from Tiruchirapalli to Sharjah experienced a technical malfunction shortly after takeoff on Wednesday evening, forcing the pilot to perform an emergency landing back at the Tiruchirapalli airport. The flight, carrying 140 passengers, was in the air for around 2.5 hours before safely landing at 8:20 PM.
The incident occurred when the aircraft’s hydraulic system malfunctioned, preventing the plane from landing as planned. The pilot, demonstrating quick thinking and expertise, declared an emergency and communicated with air traffic control. The airport was put on high alert, with over 20 ambulances and fire brigade units on standby.
The aircraft circled over Tiruchirapalli for several hours to burn fuel and reduce weight, ensuring a safe landing. The Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) continuously monitored the situation.
Air India released a statement acknowledging the incident, stating that the operating crew did not declare an emergency and that the aircraft circled to reduce fuel and weight as a precautionary measure. They also stated that the cause of the malfunction is under investigation and an alternate aircraft is being arranged for passengers to continue their journey to Sharjah.
Passengers expressed relief after the safe landing, with many praising the pilot’s skills and the crew’s calm professionalism during the ordeal. Tamil Nadu Governor R.N. Ravi also commended the pilot and co-pilot for their handling of the situation.
