**Chennai, October 11:** A major train accident occurred in Tamil Nadu on Friday, leaving at least 20 passengers injured. The Mysore-Darbhanga Express collided with a goods train near Kavarapettai railway station in the Chennai Division, causing the derailment of 12-13 coaches and a fire in two compartments.

The incident occurred around 8:27 PM when the express train was passing through Ponneri station. The train crew felt a strong jolt as it entered the loop line, followed by the collision with the stationary goods train.

According to South Western Railway’s Chief Public Relations Officer, the accident happened near Kavarapettai station between Ponneri and Kavarapettai railway stations in the Chennai-Gudur section. The fire in the parcel van next to the engine was extinguished by firefighters.

The accident caused disruptions in train services on the Chennai-Vijayawada route. While no fatalities have been reported so far, all injured passengers were rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment.

Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw is monitoring the situation from the Railway War Room in Delhi. He has spoken to railway officials and instructed them to ensure the safe transportation of all passengers to their destinations.

A medical relief van and a rescue team have been dispatched from Chennai Central to the accident site. The General Manager of Southern Railway, the Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) of the Chennai Division, and other senior officials are also on their way to the accident site.
