**Chennai, India -** A major train accident occurred in Tamil Nadu on Friday night, leaving several passengers injured. The Bagmati Express, en route to Darbhanga, Bihar, collided with a stationary goods train near Kavaippettai railway station in Tiruvallur district, resulting in the derailment of six coaches.
The impact of the collision was so severe that some of the train’s compartments caught fire. While initial reports suggested some casualties, there have been no confirmed reports of fatalities yet. Rescue operations are underway at the crash site with ambulances and NDRF teams dispatched to assist.
Southern Railway officials confirmed that the accident took place around 8:30 PM, involving Train Number 12578 (MYS-DBG) traveling from Mysore to Darbhanga. They reported that six coaches derailed after the collision, and medical relief vans and rescue teams were dispatched from Chennai Central.
Railway Board’s Executive Director (Information & Public Relations) Dilip Kumar confirmed that the Bagmati Express had derailed, and railway rescue teams were already on site. Over 90% of passengers have been evacuated, and no serious injuries or fatalities have been reported so far. The General Manager of Southern Railway and the Divisional Railway Manager of Chennai Division are heading to the accident site.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin has instructed officials to immediately reach the site and oversee rescue operations. He also directed the Chief Secretary N Muruganandam and other senior officials to provide assistance in the relief and rescue efforts. Stalin has instructed the Tiruvallur district administration and Southern Railway officials to expedite rescue and relief operations, ensure medical and basic facilities for affected passengers, and arrange their transportation.
