Fri Oct 11 07:04:19 UTC 2024: ## Trudeau Urges Canadians to Prioritize Mental Health on World Mental Health Day

**OTTAWA** – Prime Minister Justin Trudeau today issued a statement emphasizing the importance of mental health and urging Canadians to break down the stigma surrounding seeking help.

“Mental health matters,” Trudeau stated. “For too long, seeking support for mental health struggles was stigmatized. We need to have open and honest conversations about caring for ourselves and for others.”

Trudeau highlighted the government’s commitment to improving mental health services, citing the new Youth Mental Health Fund and investments in Indigenous Peoples’ access to culturally appropriate care. He also emphasized the launch of the 9-8-8 Suicide Crisis Helpline, available 24/7 across Canada.

“There’s a lot more work to be done to break the stigma,” Trudeau said. “Let’s create environments that support open conversations about mental health. Today, take some time to check in on loved ones, neighbours, and colleagues. Take care of yourselves. It’s okay not to feel okay.”

The Prime Minister concluded his statement by encouraging Canadians to reach out for help if they need it.

“By coming together, we can break down the stigma, help others feel supported, and build a healthier, more compassionate society for everyone,” he stated.

The government also reminded Canadians of the resources available for mental health support:

* **9-8-8 Suicide Crisis Helpline:** Available 24/7, 365 days a year.
* **Canada.ca/mental-health:** Provides mental health and wellness information and key links to services and supports.
* **Hope for Wellness Helpline:** Offers immediate, toll-free telephone and online-chat-based support and crisis intervention to all Indigenous people in Canada, available 24/7 in English and French, and upon request in Cree, Ojibway, and Inuktitut.

The Prime Minister’s statement on World Mental Health Day underscores the government’s commitment to improving mental health services and encourages Canadians to prioritize their own mental well-being and reach out for help when needed.
