Fri Oct 11 09:23:51 UTC 2024: ## From Leg Spinner to T20 World Cup Hero: Hardik Pandya’s Inspirational Journey
**Surat, India:** Indian all-rounder Hardik Pandya, who turns 31 today, is a celebrated figure in the world of cricket. He has become a vital part of the Indian team’s pace attack, known for his ability to break partnerships and deliver lethal spells in the death overs. His heroics in the T20 World Cup final, where he turned the tide of the match with a spell of 3 wickets for 20 runs in 3 overs, will be etched in cricketing history. But did you know that this pace-bowling sensation once dreamt of becoming a leg spinner?
Pandya’s journey to the top is a testament to hard work and dedication. Growing up in Surat, he and his brother Krunal moved to Baroda with their father, Himanshu Pandya, to avail better cricketing facilities. Their father enrolled them in the academy of former Indian wicket-keeper Kiran More.
His childhood coach, Jitendra Kumar, remembers a young Hardik, just seven years old, who was extremely dedicated. He would arrive at the academy first and exhibit a strong work ethic. While initially, he was a pure batsman, he ventured into leg spin later.
His transformation from a leg spinner to a pace bowler was an unexpected turn of events. During a net session, when all the fast bowlers were exhausted, coach Sanath Kumar asked Hardik to bowl. The young Pandya bowled with a speed of around 130 km/h, leaving everyone astounded by his pace and control. Kumar then began training him as a fast bowler, setting him on the path to greatness.
Pandya’s personal coach reveals that he was always a top-order batsman with a fearless approach and the ability to bat for hours. He would often request more batting practice, even after extensive sessions. In 2009, during the Vijay Hazare Trophy under-16 tournament, he displayed his resilience by batting for eight hours and scoring 228 runs off 391 deliveries. This remarkable performance earned him a spot in the under-19 Cooch Behar Trophy team.
Today, as Hardik Pandya celebrates his birthday, his inspiring journey reminds us that true potential can emerge from unexpected places. His transformation from a leg spinner to a crucial asset for Team India is a testament to his hard work, dedication, and ability to adapt.
