Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez has been suspended for two international matches by FIFA for his controversial celebrations after Argentina’s recent victories. The ban will see him miss World Cup qualifiers against Venezuela and Bolivia in October.
Martinez, who famously repeated his infamous World Cup celebrations after Argentina beat Chile, was penalized for his post-match actions. This included holding a replica Copa America trophy against his crotch and hitting a camera with his gloves.
While FIFA cited “offensive behaviour” as the reason for the suspension, the Argentine Football Association (AFA) has expressed their “absolute disagreement” with the decision.
Martinez initially apologized for any offense caused, stating that his actions were intended to “make many guys smile” and not to disrespect anyone. He also reiterated his commitment to supporting his teammates despite being unable to play.
However, in a recent interview with TNT Sports, Martinez seemingly doubled down on his behavior. He said, “You can’t control it. I give everything for my club and the national team. I give my best. Sometimes they have something against me, I can’t control it.”
This statement suggests Martinez believes there is a bias against him, despite his previous apology.
The controversy surrounding Martinez’s celebrations highlights the complex and often subjective nature of what is deemed appropriate conduct on the international stage.
