**Brooklyn, NY** – The New York Liberty, widely considered the favorites to win the WNBA championship, will face an unexpected opponent in the Finals: the Minnesota Lynx. The Lynx, who finished ninth in preseason rankings, have defied expectations and are now just three wins away from their fifth title.
The Liberty, boasting a star-studded roster, were expected to dominate the league this season. However, the Lynx, led by the All-Star forward Napheesa Collier, have proven to be a formidable challenge. Collier, who finished second in MVP voting, has been instrumental in the team’s success, leading a new-look starting five that includes sharpshooters Kayla McBride and Bridget Carleton.
The Lynx’s rise to the top has been fueled by a strong team chemistry and a stifling defense, which ranked second in the league. Head coach Cheryl Reeve, who has led the Lynx to four championships in the past, believes this team has something special.
“They were there for each other to cover, and the joy that they did it with – hadn’t experienced that in a couple of years,” Reeve said. “At the time, I just walked out of there. I didn’t tell anybody. It was just kind of like, ‘OK, this is really good.’ ”
The Lynx even defeated the Liberty twice during the regular season, showcasing their ability to compete with the league’s best.
The Finals series begins tonight at Barclays Center, and the Lynx are ready to prove their doubters wrong. “I really, really am excited for this group to prove all the prognosticators wrong once again,” said Reeve.
