Fri Oct 11 05:04:48 UTC 2024: ## Rajinikanth’s ‘Vettaiyan’ Opens Strong but Falls Short of ‘Jailer’

**Chennai, India:** Rajinikanth’s latest film “Vettaiyan” has had a strong opening weekend at the box office, grossing ₹25.27 crore in India on its first day. However, the film’s earnings fall short of the superstar’s previous release, “Jailer,” which collected ₹48.35 crore on its opening day in India.

Directed by T.S. Gnanavel, “Vettaiyan” features a star-studded cast including Amitabh Bachchan, Rana Daggubati, Fahadh Faasil, Manju Warrier, and Rithika Singh. The film marks the reunion of megastars Amitabh Bachchan and Rajinikanth after 33 years, their last collaboration being the Hindi film “Hum.”

Despite a mixed critical reception, “Vettaiyan” is poised for a successful run at the box office, particularly during the Dussehra holidays. The film has already garnered a significant audience, releasing in Tamil, Telugu, Hindi, and Kannada.

While the film’s opening weekend performance is promising, analysts believe it will need a strong first week to match or surpass the success of “Jailer.” “Vettaiyan” has also performed well internationally, earning $2 million in North America alone.

Some critics, like Avinash Ramachandran of Indianexpress.com, have noted that Rajinikanth’s presence in the film may be a detriment, with Gnanavel’s attempt to explore the themes of encounter killings and morality failing to resonate fully.

“The film has had a good start, but whether it can maintain momentum and become a major hit remains to be seen,” said one box office analyst. “The Dussehra holidays will definitely boost its earnings, but it needs to attract a wider audience to make it truly successful.”
