**Trichy, Tamil Nadu:** An Air India Express flight from Trichy to Sharjah experienced a technical malfunction mid-air, forcing it to circle for over an hour before safely landing back at Trichy Airport. The aircraft, carrying 141 passengers and crew, took off around 5:40 PM on Wednesday.
According to reports, the landing gear malfunctioned, preventing the wheels from retracting. With fuel dwindling, the pilot decided to execute a belly landing, a procedure where the aircraft lands on its fuselage. This was the second such instance in India, with a previous belly landing occurring at Cochin Airport in 2023.
The incident triggered immediate emergency measures, with fire engines, ambulances, and medical personnel deployed to the airport. Passengers and their families anxiously awaited news of the flight’s safe return.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin expressed relief upon hearing the news of the safe landing. He also commended the pilot and crew for their quick response and expertise.
