Wed Oct 09 10:22:05 UTC 2024: ## Nobel Prize in Chemistry Awarded for Protein Revolution
**Stockholm, Sweden -** This year’s Nobel Prize in Chemistry has been awarded to three scientists for their groundbreaking work in understanding and manipulating proteins.
**David Baker**, of the University of Washington, Seattle, received the award for his “computational protein design”. Baker has developed methods that allow researchers to create entirely new proteins with tailored functions, opening doors to innovations in fields like nanomaterials, targeted pharmaceuticals, and vaccine development.
**Demis Hassabis** and **John M. Jumper**, both of Google DeepMind in London, were jointly awarded the prize for their pioneering work in “protein structure prediction.” Using artificial intelligence, they developed a system capable of predicting the structure of almost every known protein, significantly advancing our understanding of these fundamental building blocks of life.
The Nobel Committee praised the laureates for their work, stating that their discoveries have “revolutionized our understanding of proteins and their potential for solving some of the world’s most pressing challenges.” The prize, worth 11 million Swedish kronor (USD 1 million), is awarded annually in honor of Alfred Nobel, the Swedish inventor who established the prestigious awards.
