Wed Oct 09 12:06:25 UTC 2024: ## Three Scientists Awarded Nobel Prize in Chemistry for Protein Research

**Stockholm, Sweden:** The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences has announced the 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, awarding the prestigious prize to three scientists for their groundbreaking work on proteins.

David Baker, from the University of Washington in Seattle, was awarded one half of the prize for his contributions to computational protein design. The other half was jointly awarded to Demis Hassabis and John M. Jumper, both from Google DeepMind in London, for their groundbreaking work in protein structure prediction.

Baker’s research has led to the development of new protein designs, with potential applications in pharmaceuticals, vaccines, nanomaterials, and sensors. Hassabis and Jumper, using artificial intelligence models, have successfully predicted the structure of nearly all 200 million proteins identified by researchers.

The Nobel Committee highlighted the transformative impact of these advancements, stating that the research has significantly accelerated scientific progress in understanding and manipulating proteins, paving the way for new discoveries and applications in various fields.

This year’s Nobel Prize announcements began on Monday with the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine being awarded to Victor Ambros and Gary Ruvkun for their discovery of microRNA. On Tuesday, John Hopfield and Geoffrey Hinton received the Nobel Prize in Physics for their pioneering work in machine learning.

The Nobel Prize in Literature will be announced tomorrow, Thursday, followed by the Nobel Peace Prize on Friday, and the Nobel Prize in Economics on October 14th.
