Haryana’s upcoming assembly elections are set to be a close contest between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Congress, with the state’s Dalit community holding the key to victory. Comprising 20% of the population, Dalit voters, particularly the Jatavs, Valmikis, Dhanuks, and Mazhabi Sikhs, are poised to play a decisive role in shaping the state’s political landscape.
While the state’s dominant Jat community (27%) holds significant political and social influence, the Dalit community, largely rural and dependent on Jat farmers, is increasingly asserting its political voice. This struggle for representation and recognition is influencing their voting choices, with parties vying to secure their support.
The Congress, traditionally relying on the support of Jats and Muslims, faces a challenge in winning over Dalit voters. Internal leadership clashes and the marginalization of prominent Dalit leaders within the party have caused discontent among this crucial voter base.
The Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), in an alliance with the Indian National Lok Dal, aims to consolidate support from Jat and Dalit voters, particularly among the Jatavs. However, the party faces competition from the Bhim Army leader, Chandrashekhar Azad, who is allied with the Jannayak Janata Party (JJP) and could fracture the Jatav vote.
The BJP, hoping to secure the support of non-Jatav Dalit communities like Valmiki and Dhanuks, may benefit from the recent sub-classification of Scheduled Castes for quotas. This move could potentially influence how these communities vote.
Ultimately, the Dalit vote is not a monolithic entity, with various caste, class, and political interests at play. The outcome of the Haryana elections will depend on how Dalits react to the marginalization of their representatives in the Congress, the allure of the BSP’s alliance, and the BJP’s potential appeal to specific sub-groups within the community. This battle for representation and power will undoubtedly determine the state’s future government.
