**LOS ANGELES** – Get ready to return to Genovia! Disney is officially moving forward with a third installment of the beloved “The Princess Diaries” franchise, with Anne Hathaway reprising her role as Mia Thermopolis.

Hathaway, who rose to fame through the original 2001 film and its 2004 sequel, will also serve as a producer on the project. “The fairy tale continues,” she shared on Instagram, confirming her involvement.

Directing the film is Adele Lim, known for her work on “Crazy Rich Asians” and “Joy Ride.” “As a diehard fan of the original Princess Diaries, I’m beyond excited to be a part of bringing the third iteration of this beloved franchise to life,” Lim said in a statement. “We look forward to celebrating its core tenants of female power, joy, and mentorship with audiences worldwide.”

The original “Princess Diaries” film, directed by Gary Marshall, introduced audiences to Mia Thermopolis, a clumsy teen who discovers she is the heir to the throne of Genovia. The film, based on Meg Cabot’s book, saw Mia undergo a transformation under the watchful eye of her grandmother, the regal Queen Clarisse Renaldi, played by Julie Andrews.

Debra Martin Chase, producer of the original film, will return for the third installment. Production is expected to begin next year.
