Mon Oct 07 19:14:34 UTC 2024: ## Category 5 Hurricane Milton Threatens Florida with Record-Breaking Winds

**TAMPA, FL** – Hurricane Milton, a powerful Category 5 storm with sustained winds of 175 mph, is rapidly intensifying in the Gulf of Mexico and heading straight for Florida. The storm, which is the strongest Atlantic hurricane since Hurricane Dorian in 2019, is prompting mandatory evacuations along Florida’s west coast as residents prepare for life-threatening impacts.

The National Hurricane Center warns that Milton’s storm surge, potentially reaching 12 feet in some areas, could be particularly devastating. This is especially concerning for Tampa Bay, which could see a surge exceeding that of Hurricane Helene in 2017.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has declared a state of emergency for 51 counties, and President Joe Biden has approved an emergency declaration authorizing federal assistance for disaster relief efforts.

Hurricane watches extend from Chokoloskee to the mouth of the Suwanee River, while Tropical Storm Watches are in effect for the Florida Keys and portions of the panhandle. Storm Surge Watches are also in place for a majority of Florida’s Gulf Coast.

The hurricane is currently located about 700 miles southwest of Tampa and is expected to pass near or just north of Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula on Monday and Tuesday. It is then forecast to cross the eastern Gulf of Mexico and approach the west coast of Florida by Wednesday.

Experts warn that the unprecedented rapid intensification of Milton in the Gulf of Mexico is a significant concern and emphasize the importance of heeding evacuation orders.
