Mon Oct 07 19:03:51 UTC 2024: ## Hurricane Milton Threatens Florida’s Battered Coast

**TAMPA, FL** – Hurricane Milton, now a Category 5 hurricane with sustained winds of 175 mph, is barreling towards Florida’s west coast, threatening to deliver a devastating blow to an area still recovering from Hurricane Helene. The storm is expected to make landfall on Wednesday, bringing life-threatening storm surge, flooding rain, and damaging winds.

The National Hurricane Center (NHC) issued hurricane watches for portions of Florida, urging residents to heed the advice of local officials. Milton rapidly intensified from a Category 2 to a Category 5 hurricane in just a few hours, leaving a trail of devastation in its wake.

The storm is projected to gradually weaken before reaching the coast, but it is still expected to be a large and powerful hurricane at landfall. Rainfall is expected to total 5-10 inches in some areas, with isolated communities potentially experiencing up to 15 inches. A potentially deadly storm surge of 8-12 feet is possible for Tampa and other coastal communities.

As Milton approaches, residents are bracing for the storm’s impact. Elasa Tiernan, whose home in Crystal Beach was flooded by Hurricane Helene, is facing the prospect of another devastating storm. “I’m going to make sure we have everything we need,” she said. “Being a mom of a 14-year-old, you don’t really have a lot of time to think otherwise, right?”

Tampa International Airport will suspend flight operations at 9 a.m. Tuesday, reopening when safe to do so. Airlines are issuing waivers allowing travelers to change their tickets without penalty.

Governor Ron DeSantis has declared a state of emergency for 51 of Florida’s 67 counties, allowing for more freedom in coordinating emergency agencies and relaxing restrictions. The state is preparing for the largest evacuation since Hurricane Irma in 2017.

Meanwhile, Western North Carolina is still in heavy cleanup mode from Hurricane Helene. Nearly 1,000 soldiers are working with FEMA to distribute food, water, and other necessities. The National Guard has activated over 6,100 guardsmen to assist in rescue and recovery efforts.

As residents along Florida’s coast prepare for Hurricane Milton’s impact, the storm serves as a stark reminder of the increasing frequency and intensity of hurricanes in recent years.
