Tue Oct 08 09:31:22 UTC 2024: ## Independent Candidate Chitra Sarwara Leading in Ambala Cantt. as BJP Inches Towards Victory in Haryana
**Ambala Cantt., Haryana (October 26, 2023):** In a stunning upset, independent candidate Chitra Sarwara is currently leading in the Ambala Cantt. assembly constituency, according to the Election Commission of India’s trends as counting for the October 5th election continues. Sarwara, a Congress rebel, is ahead of BJP veteran and sitting MLA Anil Vij, who has won the seat six times.
With six out of 16 rounds of counting completed, Sarwara has secured 20,443 votes, while Vij trails with 19,898 votes. Sarwara, who was denied a Congress ticket, is contesting against the party’s official candidate, Parvinder Pal Pari, who is currently in third place.
Her victory comes despite being suspended from the Congress for six years for “anti-party” activities. Sarwara’s political career began in 2013 when she was elected as an independent corporator from Ambala Cantt. She later joined the Congress and served in various roles before leaving the party to contest as an independent.
This win for Sarwara adds to the surprise of the day as the BJP, defying exit polls and 10-year anti-incumbency, is leading on 51 out of 90 seats in the Haryana assembly. The Congress is currently leading on 34 seats.
While the overall election results are still unfolding, Sarwara’s lead in Ambala Cantt. signifies a potential shift in the political landscape of Haryana, potentially signaling a strong wave of discontent against incumbent parties.
