Mon Oct 07 19:03:01 UTC 2024: ## Former South African Batter JP Duminy Makes Surprise Fielding Appearance in ODI against Ireland

**Abu Dhabi, UAE:** In a surprising turn of events, former South African batsman and current batting coach JP Duminy was called upon to field in the third ODI against Ireland on Monday in Abu Dhabi. Duminy, who retired from ODIs in 2019, stepped onto the field as a substitute fielder after several players were affected by the intense heat in the UAE.

The incident occurred in the final over of the Irish innings when Duminy replaced a fatigued player. He immediately showcased his skills by diving full length to make a spectacular catch at short third off a top-edge from Irish batter Harry Tector.

This unexpected fielding appearance came amidst a series of injuries in the South African squad. Captain Temba Bavuma missed the third ODI due to an elbow injury, while all-rounder Wiaan Mulder returned home for personal reasons. Opener Tony de Zorzi is also recovering from a knee injury sustained in the first ODI.

Despite these setbacks, South Africa holds a commanding lead in the three-match series, having won the first two ODIs. The series began with a two-match T20I series that ended in a 1-1 draw.

Ireland, who won the toss and chose to bat first, put up a challenging target of 284 runs. Captain Paul Stirling led the way with a fluent 88 runs off 92 balls, while Harry Tector and Andy Balbirnie also contributed significantly to the total.

Duminy’s fielding appearance, though unexpected, showcased his dedication to the team and his commitment to helping South Africa secure a clean sweep of the series.
